The Customer
Mohn Media Mohndruck GmbH has been synonymous with tradition and performance in the printing industry since 1835. The company, with sites at its headquarters in Gütersloh and in Marienfeld, is part of Bertelsmann and, as Europe's leading print service provider, processes more than 420 thousand tonnes of paper annually with modern machinery and around 1,600 employees working in three shifts.
In addition to publishing products, a wide range of prepress services as well as printing and finishing, the company's broad range of services also includes a variety of additional services that are tailored directly to individual customer requirements. With a portfolio of catalogues, brochures, magazines, books and individual direct marketing materials, Mohn Media generates annual sales in the mid three-digit million range.
The Challenge
In the first phase of the project, the new autonomous transport robots will be used in a section of the bindery in Marienfeld to dispose of the machines and automatically transport the bound catalogues and magazines to the packaging systems. In addition, the vehicles are intended to ensure that the large-scale plants are supplied with semi-finished products as well as auxiliary and operating materials in order to minimize empty runs.
From the design and selection of components to the turnkey integration, the engineering aimed to provide a tailor-made solution to ensure the long-term organisational function of intralogistics, further increase internal safety and at the same time meet the increased efficiency requirements of the modern printing industry. This also demands a user-friendly interface for controlling the AGVs, so that the workers can communicate intuitively and effortlessly with the automated guided vehicle system after a short training phase. For this purpose, mR MOBILE ROBOTS has created a manufacturer-independent software solution which is used as a further component of the complete solution at Mohn Media.

The Project
As one of the leading providers of automation solutions in the intralogistics sector and a specialist in the integration of autonomous vehicle fleets in various industries, mR MOBILE ROBOTS carried out a detailed analysis of Mohn Media's automation plans in 2023. Together with the customer, a decision was made in favour of a pilot project at the Marienfeld plant and a corresponding requirements and functional specification was drawn up.
The integrator and customer selected the 'Wewo AGV Palletmover' as the basic hardware for the autonomous vehicle fleets to be integrated at the printing sites, as this device offers the advantage of being able to pick up pallets directly from the floor and, in future, directly from the machines, in addition to its sufficient load capacity of 1.3 tonnes. Thanks to its free lift, the driverless transport system can also deliver pallets to the packaging systems without any additional hardware components.
The pilot project with the Palletmover from Dutch manufacturer Wewo Techmotion required careful planning and the creation of standardized processes as well as the adaptation of the building infrastructure. "If you intend to integrate an AGV into previously manual logistics, the topic of 'standardizing processes' is right at the top of the agenda", emphasises Roland Witte, Management Board Production & Technology at Mohn Media. In addition to mapping the factory halls and defining the routes, the integration team also had to query many signals from the building infrastructure, such as high-speed doors, fire protection doors, lorry locks, fire alarm systems and packaging systems, and integrate them into the AGV control system.
Added Value for the Customer
For the senior technology manager at Mohn Media, two aspects of intralogistics automation in particular represent key added value: Efficiency and safety. Roland Witte emphasises that the autonomous fleet takes account of the extremely tense situation in the personnel sector. The valuable, but often no longer sufficiently available staff could be utilised more effectively in other, more productive areas of the company. With regard to the driving force 'workplace safety', Witte explains that a permanent automated material flow replaces manual, sometimes hectic journeys: "We have already established in another test area of our printing plant in Gütersloh that the automatic supply by AGV brings calm and relaxation to the logistical processes".
For Mohn Media, as for other customers, the decisive advantages of working explicitly with mR MOBILE ROBOTS result from a whole bundle of services. On the one hand, the Meinerzhagen-based company always has a very comprehensive, ultimately manufacturer-independent market overview and maintains a wide variety of technology partnerships, thanks to which access to numerous components is guaranteed, which can be individually combined in the best possible way for specific industries, companies and projects. Thus, the Wewo AGV Palletmover was selected as the perfect vehicle for the automation project at Mohn Media based on the customer's operational requirements and project organisation parameters.
Furthermore, mR MOBILE ROBOTS is renowned for its careful and seamless integration into pre-existing systems, enabling smooth embedding into the working environment of an ongoing operation and complementary collaborative use with human operators. An autonomous system that had already been introduced at Mohn Media in the past, which differs widely from the new Wewo pallet transporters in terms of device operation, was integrated with the highly intuitive ‘mR Mission Control’ software solution developed for this purpose, so that employees always have the same user interface when requesting a transport robot, for example.
The comprehensive additional services also played a key role in Mohn Media's decision to select the integrator. In a long-term service partnership, inspection and maintenance of the vehicle fleet are handled by a single supplier, which guarantees systemically reliable 24/7 operation.
Outlook
"Following the successful fulfilment of our ambitious goals, we will convert the entire intralogistics of our large bindery site in Marienfeld to the new AGVs", explains Roland Witte. The aim is to continue the successful collaboration with the Meinerzhagen-based integrator. "The cooperation with mR MOBILE ROBOTS has gone very well so far. A decisive advantage of this team is the short decision-making paths. This enables structured project management with rapid technical progress; the project objective always remains in focus", explains the technology director with confidence.
In the meantime, intralogistics automation by mR MOBILE ROBOTS has also been initiated at the Mohn Media plant at the Gütersloh headquarters - also with AGVs by Wewo Techmotion and the integrator's proven automation modules.
